Description

The Lake Michigan Campground is located approximately 18 miles west of St. Ignace, between US-2 and the Lake Michigan shoreline. Dunes, waves, sand and wind, are the primary environmental factors present here. The view of the lake is spectacular. Water birds in the area are fun to watch. In the early morning watch the lake for ducks, like the common merganser and hooded merganser. Shore birds, like the spotted sandpiper, go running up and down the beaches.

Additional Details

There are 35 campsites, cold running water and some flush toilets as well as vault toilets. Many sites are excellent tent sites, located between dunes 20 to 30 feet high. Other sites are suitable for trailers and other recreational vehicles. Two spaces are specially located for the handicapped.

You might consider hiking some of the excellent trails in the area. The Sand Dunes Cross-Country Ski Trail is an excellent system of trail loops for hiking in the summer. Depending on your time and inclination, you may hike from 1.5 to 6.2 miles without retracing steps. You may also want to hike sections of the North Country Trail.

When the wind is in the south or southwest, large waves crash onto the sandy shores. Riding these waves can be exciting and a lot of fun for all, but please remember there can be a dangerous undertow when the winds are high. Children, as well as adults, should be warned and watched carefully. There are no lifeguards. Swimming is at your own risk.

The fishing at the 4,233-acre Brevort Lake is excellent. Brevort Lake has excellent fishing for smallmouth bass, crappies, sunfish, perch, northern pike, muskellunge, and walleye.

If you have your own boat, access is in the Brevort Lake Campground. Boat or canoe rental is available at the store in the campground and at resorts on the lake.

The city of St. Ignace offers visitors much in the way of recreation. The ferries to historic Mackinac Island, the museums, shopping, golfing, restaurants, and many other opportunities are available for your enjoyment.

Lake Michigan Campground is a concessionaire-operated fee area. Golden Passports are accepted.
